Recommended Reading from WTCQD

You'll find in the below recommendations a wide range of topics. From physics to metaphysics, fiction to hard fact, medical science to spirituality, and from grim reality to lightness of being, all connected by a silken thread of healing. Without the below books my Tai Chi practice and teaching would have been much less then they are. Few of the books are directly about Tai Chi per say, but at its core Tai Chi is about finding our center, and becoming a harmonious part of the web of life. Understanding that web makes our Tai Chi deeper and richer. Tai Chi's greatest power is to help us "empty" of what we know, so that we can open to endless knowledge.

"Does our intention during our Tai Chi or Qigong practice affect the results/benefits?"

Should the below book's findings trigger a "combat vs. healing" tai chi & qigong debate?

This months featured book (see below), indicates that not only are we humans made primarily from water, but that by viewing ice crystals formed from water exposed to different "intentions" or thoughts, we find that our physical structure is actually changed by those intentions. This begs the question, "Does practicing Tai Chi or Qigong with combat intentions diminish the healing effects of Tai Chi or Qigong vs. practicing with health & healing intentions?"

A comment from World Tai Chi & Qigong Day:

As suggested in the above WTCQD poll and debate, emerging modern research offers much to today's Tai Chi & Qigong practitioner and teacher to better understand the profound life and health benefits that Tai Chi & Qigong offer.

Not only will this help us get more out of our forms, but it will better enable us to explain it to a larger society, hungry for solutions to their modern stress problems.

In this profound new book, The Hidden Messages in Water, the author, Masaru Emoto, examines how "intention" is where everything begins.

During experiments of exposing water to thoughts, messages, intentions and then examining the ice-crystals that formed depending on the intentions the water was subjected to . . . the author was astounded at the results.

In the book's cover image (left), you see water/ice crystals after the water was exposed to a "prayer for healing," which displays an elegant and aesthetically beautiful image. However, the image below is of the ice after the water was exposed to the message "I will kill you." This image appears metallic, disjointed, and some might say, like vomit.

Ice crystal observed above, after the water was
exposed to the message "I will kill you!"

The implications of this book's findings are profound. Ultimately they show us that the moment to moment intentions we hold in our hearts and minds are what is creating the world around us in a very physical way.

They also found similar opposing patterns in fresh natural water vs. polluted waters, where of course the unpolluted water displayed beautiful crystal patterns, while the polluted water's were not pretty.

". . . according to conservative estimates published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), iatrogenic illness [illness resulting from medical treatment] is the third-leading cause of death in this country. . .

". . . last year a new study, based on the results of a ten-year survey of government statistics, came up with even more dismal figures. [Null, et al, 2003] That study concludes that iatrogenic illness [illness resulting from medical treatment] is actually the leading cause of death in the United States and that adverse reactions to prescription drugs are responsible for more than 300,000 deaths a year."

"These are dismaying statistics, especially for a healing profession that has arrogantly dismissed three thousand years of effective Eastern medicine as unscientific, even though it is based on a deeper understanding of the Universe. For thousands of years, long before Western scientists discovered the laws of quantum physics, Asians have honored energy as the principal factor contributing to health and well-being. . ."

"The physical sciences have already embraced quantum physics with sensational results. . . quantum physics made possible the electronic miracles that are the foundation of the Information Age. The application of quantum mechanics was directly responsible for the development of TV's, computers, CAT scans, lasers, rocket ships, and cell phones."

"But what great and marvelous advances in biomedical sciences can we attribute to the quantum revolution? Let's list them in order of their importance:

It is a very short list -- there haven't been any. . ."

. . . [on quantum fields and biology]

“. . .[cell] receptors can read energy fields . . . biological behavior can be controlled by invisible forces . . .as well as by physical molecules like penicillin, a fact that provides the scientific under-pinnings for pharmaceutical-free energy medicine."

"I believe the major reason why energy [medicine] research has been all but ignored comes down to dollars and cents. The trillion dollar pharmaceutical industry puts its research money into the search for magic bullets in the form of chemicals because pills mean money . . . they educate the public about dangers of these menacing disorders. Of course, the over-simplified symptomology used in defining the dysfunctions prevalent in drug company advertisements has viewers convinced they are afflicted by that particular malady. "Do you worry? Worry is a primary symptom of "medical condition" called Anxiety Disorder. Stop your worry. Tell your doctor you want Addictazac, the new passion-pink drug.” "

" . . . even today very little scientific rigor has been marshalled to assess the effectiveness of complementary [energy] medicine. The National Institutes of Health did create an "alternative medicine" branch, thanks to pressure from the public. But that is only a token gesture to quell activists and consumers who spend lots of money on alternative health care. There are no serious research funds available for studying energy medicine. The rub is that without supportive research, energy-based healing modalities are officially labeled "unscientific."

A comment from World Tai Chi & Qigong Day:

Recently, I became aware [because an associate told me] of a study that found that subjects who practiced Tai Chi were 50% less likely to come down with the shingles virus, and the researchers believed those results would likely carry over to other virus resistence as well.

If we lived in an authentic media environment, this stunning revalation would have been on the front pages, and prime network news spots. A therapy that can improve resistence to virul infection by "50 PERCENT !!! WOW !!". But, it wasn't a big story, and I'd be willing to bet that most people are unaware of it. Of course we all know too well many other amazing study results validating the profound health benefits of the Traditional Chinese Medical self-therapies of Tai Chi and Qigong, that have gone under-reported. Leaving many people with hypertension, chronic pain, arthritis, allergies, fibromyalgia, or other chronic conditions painfully ignorant of a therapy that might help them.

Mr. Lipton's Biology of Belief is a profound work, that helps us see in very stark terms that our health system and health media's reluctance to fully explore and embrace quantum physics in the form of energy medicine is creating a huge deficit in our health care on many levels. Everyone should own this profound book and get copies for their loved ones, and their physicians, local media's health reporters, and local hospitals.

Several years ago I called a major newspaper's health reporter to suggest they cover breaking research on how Tai Chi had benefited a health malady. The health reporter curtly replied that it would be impossible for them to do another "tai chi story" because they'd done one the month before. I asked if it was about Tai Chi benefiting the same health problem and she said it had been on another health topic. So, I asked, "If you got a call from a surgical hospital or a pharmaceutical company, regarding a breakthrough in treating a health condition, would you reply `I'm sorry, we carried a drug/surgery article last month on a wholly different condition that drugs/surgery helped. We couldn't possible do another drug/surgery story now.'?"

. . . she hung up on me.
